The same knee-jerk that put drivers into SUVs last decade is taking a lot of them out, and in a lot of cases thats an over-reaction, too. The answer for many isnt "no SUV", its a smarter, right-sized SUV, which in most cases means a crossover.

Its been a while since weve done a review of a Chevrolet Equinox, so we borrowed one from Courtesy Chevrolet in Phoenix for a week.

Chevys done a great job of covering a wide price range with the Equinox, which is its smallest crossover. The base model (LS) starts at $22,995 in front-wheel drive. There are three trim levels up from there (1LT, 2LT and LTZ) and all four are also available in all-wheel drive.

Ours was the front-wheel drive LTZ. Base price $28,570. Thatll get you the 2.4 liter 4-cylinder ECOTEC engine with 182 horsepower hooked up to a 6-speed automatic transmission and some nice EPA fuel economy estimates: 22 city/32 highway. Also on the standard goodies list: Four wheel anti-lock disc brakes, Stabilitrak, remote keyless entry, OnStar, a rear-view camera, Ultrasonic parking assist, programmable power lifgate, heated power outside mirrors, 17-inch aluminum sheels, fog lamps, projector beam headlamps, and and exterior chrome package.

Inside, the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox is comfortable and, in LTZ trim, loaded.

The standard equipment list for the interior is pretty long, too: Leather appointed seats with heated front buckets, 8-way power memory drivers seat and memory mirrors, sliding and reclining rear seats, automatic climate control, cargo net, cover and cross rails, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, AM/FM/SiriusXM/CD 8-speaker Pioneer audio system, Bluetooth, outside temperature and compass, self-dimming rear view mirror and leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls.

Again, thats all part of the deal at $28,570. Not bad. In fact, very good. Good enough, in fact, that ours added only two options: 19-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels ($1,250) and the 3.0 liter V6 engine ($1,500).

About the engine...its a big step up in power...to 264 horses. Its great. But its also never going to get you anywhere near the mileage of the standard four. In fact, in 60% city street and 40% urban freeway driving, we averaged 16.5 miles per gallon (the EPA estimates 17 city/24 highway for the V6). If your driving includes mountain passes, that may be a trade worth making. If, on the other hand, youre mostly doing city-street commuting, seriously consider sticking with the ECOTEC four. 

With the V6, the Equinoxs bottom line was $32,130. Stick with the four and stick with the stock 17-inch wheels, and shed come in at $29,380.

Chevy says the Equinoxs prime competition is the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape, all three well into their product cycle. The Equinox is by far the freshest of the four and should be on your  list.

How to Test an ABS Speed Sensor

1. Elevate the rear of the vehicle in a secure position with a car jack, and place it on jack stands. Place wheel blocks around the front tires. Remove the rear tires to test the ABS speed sensors.
2. Locate where the engines electrical wiring harness meets the sensors electrical wiring harness. This is generally in proximity and secured around the strut housing in the wheel well in the front and the shocks in the rear.
3. Remove the sensor from its position using a quarter-inch ratchet with an 8- to 10-mm socket, which is generally located by the heat shield on the caliper.
4. Examine the end of the sensor. If it looks like a big fur ball at the end, then too much contamination is disrupting the sensor.
5. Spray the sensor with brake cleaner and wipe with the rag to remove contamination. Contamination on the sensor can send erroneous signals to the computer.
6. Disconnect the engine harness from the sensor harness. Set the voltage meter to Ohms, and connect the positive and negative terminals of the voltage meter to the input and output on the sensor. If the voltage meter registers as infinity, then the sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.
7. Switch the meter back to Volts, if you do not see an infinity in the ohms setting. If the voltage meter reads above 5 volts, it is starting to fail and can cause intermittent problems. If the voltage meter reads below 5 volts, check the knock sensor for corrosion and check the electrical connections leading to the knock sensor.

How to Find the Build Date of an Audi

Obtaining Build Year from VIN
1. Obtain the vehicles VIN from the dashboard, a body panel, or the Audis engine bay. Newer Audis have a display window for the VIN at the lower drivers side corner of the windshield.
2. Count out to the 10th character in the VIN and note its value.
3. The 10th character identifies the model year by providing a letter, or number. For example, 1997 is represented by the letter V, 1998 is represented by W, 1999 is represented by X, 2000 by Y, 2001 is 1, 2002 is 2, and so on.

4. Locate the specifications sheet for your Audi in one of the door jams. If your car is a coupe, it is most likely located in the drivers side door jam. If its a sedan, check the rear door jams.
5. Locate the Build Date field on the specifications sheet
6. Note the month and year printed on the specifications sheet in the Build Date field.

How Do I Replace the Fuel Filter on a 2001 BMW 330i

1. Open the glove box. Open the fuse box by turning the two white tabs on either side of it. Remove the #54 fuse, which controls the fuel pump. Remove the gas cap. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls from lack of fuel.
2. Raise the BMW with a floor jack. Lower it onto jack stands at all four corners. Remove the fuel filter protective panel, which is located under the car just to the front of the drivers seat. The panel is held on with four screws that are removed with a Phillips screwdriver.
3. Remove the metal clamp that holds the fuel filter in place using your hand. Loosen the six hose clamps that fasten the fuel lines to the fuel filter. Place a container under the filter to catch spilled fuel. Pull the hoses off of the filter. You may need to twist the hoses with pliers to get them off of the filter.
4. Drain the excess fuel from the filter into the container. Discard the filter. Install the new fuel filter in the same orientation as the old one. Slide the fuel lines onto the new filter. It is recommended to replace the BMW hose clamps with conventional hose clamps that can be tightened with a screwdriver, as the original clamps require a special tool to tighten easily. You can also use a pair of pliers to tighten the original hose clamps a little at a time.
5. Reinstall the clamp that holds the filter in place. Reinstall the oil filter protective panel. Lower the car back to the ground. Reinstall the #54 fuse. Put the fuel cap back on. Start the car and check for leaks.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Team Hits New Era

On Thursday, Fernando and Lewis will join Pedro for a team event at a beach front restaurant in Melbourne, before arriving at the Albert Park track to walk the track with their engineers and partake in the first technical meeting of the Grand Prix.

The team has spent time during the winter season with Fernando and Lewis familiarizing everyone and building one solid unit. The phase was more like a process of learning and having two new drivers to add element of motivation.

"Having spent the winter getting to know my new team and new car, I feel really at home and am very motivated to start racing. I always enjoy Australia, there is a great atmosphere and I am excited to get out there and see where we are compared to the other teams," said Alonso. "There are a lot of new things in the sport this season such as new rules, all teams running on Bridgestone Potenzas, drivers changing teams. Everyone is starting from zero and it is going to make things very interesting. Am I going to go out at Albert Park and win my first race with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes? We are certainly going to push hard to try."

Both drivers have been working closely with their race engineers during testing at the McLaren Technology Centre. Alonso is working with Mark Slade and Hamilton with Phil Prew. During the Grands Prix, Fernando will have Steve Hallam as his contact on the pit wall and then Lewis will be speaking with Richard Hopkirk. Car racing parts are also checked to ensure maximum performance. These cars may not be mated to Bosch product lines but the power is remarkably better.

"Taking to the grid Australia is the end of one journey for me and the start of an even bigger one. I have been working incredibly hard towards this moment over the past few months, testing, physical training, working with the engineers at the McLaren Technology Centre and studying the regulations," Hamilton said. "I feel I have the experience I need and I definitely feel ready to get out there. This year will be a learning curve for me, Albert Park is one of the seven new tracks Ill be racing on, but it is not a huge problem more an exciting challenge. I have always enjoyed street circuits, so it is great to start my career in Formula 1 with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes here."
